Friday! I’m already back in Baton Rouge this week. My dentist wasn’t happy with the condition of my teeth this morning. :(

Ah, well. Back to work on the building.

I looked at this and thought “graduation day”.

Shit, my daughter had her first cleaning since getting her braces off, and she has a half dozen little cavities growing where the brackets were.

I had that issue on one tooth after my braces came off. Right now I’m dealing with several cracked or broken teeth, the direct result of a crown coming off while I was eating and me biting down on it. I already had one tooth replaced with an implant. I’m pretty sure there’s another in my near future. The dentist had the audacity to ask me if I was eating rocks. It’s been a couple of years, so he had forgotten what had happened.

I have one tooth that got a root canal by my pediatric dentist after my accident (my jaw was broken too). Everyone tells me I need to get it crowned, but I don’t see it. S he did such a good job 32 years ago that I’ll just leave it as is. I do need to get some fillings replaced though.

Why am I telling you my dental history? Anyway, this is where you get thankful for employer  dental benefits. That stuff adds up too fast.

Even with dental, it’s really expensive. I’m not clear in why it costs so much. The materials can’t be that expensive. The cost per  time should be the same whether he’s filling a cavity or fitting an implant.

You’re paying for expertise. Any medical care that’s a concrete billable procedure always costs more than an office visit because it’s not just about the time. That’s why surgeons earn more than interests.

And dental coverage is apart and always more than medical. There are historical reasons for that I won’t go into here, but its better than people who have no coverage and just limp along until it’ s denture time.

I understand that we’re paying for expertise. I’m paid for my expertise.

HOWEVER! When you are looking at time, paying 100 x the amount to the same guy for a different service, you have to wonder what’s driving that cost.

His  student loans and Bentley payments are what’s driving that cost.

Anyone can wash your windshield, not everyone is able to replace it.  Sometimes more difficult or tedious work requires more mental energy as well.
